Mercy Mission Bear Hospital and Adoption Agency was founded in November 2012 by Dr. Marcia Ann Mims Coppertino to address the needs of those suffering from short or long term and terminal illnesses as well as  lonely seniors and elders and children in need of "comfort care" friends in the form of teddy bears when undergoing treatment for life threatening illnesses.

Dr Coppertino recognized the emotional trauma that children as well as teddy bears suffer as a result of abandonment, re-location, discardment and change of ownership, and made a decision to "keep alive" the premise that stuffed bears are therapeutic, silent friends and great company keepers to their owners.

Dr Coppertino and the Mercy Mission volunteer staff knew that reviving the American Teddy Bear and it's vivid history would stir emotions of endearment for all things tender, at a time when crisis after crisis is affecting America. To remember the teddy bear in love would only bring joy and comfort to those awaiting surgery, treatments and most of all....a new life with a new friend, the bear!

At present, Mercy Mission Bear Hospital employs 4 Seamstresses and 2 Repair Assistants; a Bear Nurse Practitioner, an "Surgical" Doctor and several volunteers who have the task of light office work, along with responsibility of locating, retrieving and delivering various abandoned and discarded bears to our donated facilities in the city of Gardena. We also receive calls from owners who donate the bears to us for repairs, cleaning and re-tagging them for adoption, while new teddy bears are donated to sick and homeless children across So California and beyond.

We are happy to report that 90% of all proceeds donated to Mercy Mission Bear Hospital yearly are used to carry out our mission with the balance remaining to the operating costs of our temporary facilities. We also present monthly lectures and workshops on "Teddy Bear Care and Preservation"; "Teddy Bear Origins"; perform the "From Agency to Bedside" talks; "TeddyBears and Cancer" series, "Teddy Bears and Children's Diseases"; "Bears and Therapy Techniques"; "How To Take Advantage of The Aspects of Healing With Teddy Bears"; "How To Journal With Teddy"; "Teddy Bears Down Through the Centuries and in Antiquity", and how to perform prayers with Teddy Bears by your side ....AND MORE!

Dr Coppertino states that there is no shortage of the needs for the teddy bears presence, and that they are always a welcome site in clinics, medical offices, nursing homes, convalescent homes and hospitals and the family home in general. They also make great office friends when a soft touch and a reminder of days gone by is needed, are of course, they are trouble free and they tell no secrets!

Please support Mercy Mission Bear Hospital and Adoption Agency with your financial gifts and bear donations! A DONOR CERTIFICATE, suitable for framing, is available to all donors and supporters if requested!
